A Uniquely Austrian Experience

I am proud to be an Austrian.  So, as promised, aside from my random ramblings about American politics, I want to use this blog to tell you a little bit more about the beautiful little country I am from.   It is not all Mozart or Schwarzenegger (though, I’m secretly proud of him – I mean – seriously – an Austrian became Governor of California – how cool is that).  Anyway,  I hope all of you get a chance to visit Austria one day.  And when you do, I encourage you to go off the beaten path, and venture outside of Vienna or Salzburg.  Yes, the historical and cultural sights there are amazing, but there is so much more to Austria than the Mirabell Gardens or the Vienna Hofburg.  There is the back country to explore!!

I grew up in a tiny little town called Gosau, nestled deep in the Alps.  One of the most breathtaking sights in Gosau is the Gosaulake with the Dachstein – a bona fide glacier – as a backdrop.  I will dedicate a whole separate entry to this little gem (hint – it makes up the background to this blog).  Today’s entry is a secret tip for those daring souls that want some “real” Austrian cuisine.  It is called the “Klackl Huette”  and it is lodged on the hillside, right next to the lake.

A true Austrian Gem - I dare you to go check it out. Tell Vroni & Horst I said hi!

This tiny little hut is a real life extension of a local farm.  In the summer, all the cows that belong to this farm, hang out at this little hut, and the mountainous fields around it.  And in true Austrian entrepreneurial fashion, the little hut does not just serve to maintain Vroni’s family farming operation, it also serves you.  As you finish your walk around the Gosaulake, or maybe instead of a walk around the Gosaulake, stop by there to have a “Jausn” – a snack so to speak  – consisting of delicious Austrian meats, bread, and accompanied, of course by warm cow milk.  Warm, you ask? Yes warm, because after taking your order, Paula will go out to the barn, and milk the cow right then and there…. YU-UM!
